PS3 Region Codes?

Postby Ar-cen-ciel » Monday December 26, 2011 7:42 am

I know this is quite sudden, but I'd like to mention I have a Region 2 (Europe) copy of Ar tonelico Qoga, a Region 1 copy (US) of Trinity Universe and a Region 3 (Asia) copy of Atelier Totori.
As far as I know, games with different region codes won't have different content (aside from Japan where all the texts and voices are in Japanese) than others, but can these game use DLCs from Asia or US PSN? I'm new to Playstation Network, for the record. (and haven't signed for one yet just in case)

If you wanna pry on how I get all these titles with different region codes, well... first things first, I buy all these games from nearby stores... in Malaysia. They have limited stocks on PS3 titles (rarely more than ten) displayed in shelf due to their (inherently) low market share, and they tend to come in one region code or another, with little to no definite pattern, so...

First of all, moved.

Second of all, do games from different regions work on all TVs (save for HDMI)? I thought Region 2 games won't work on NTSC TVs for example...

I have the JP & US versions of a few games myself and I have the DLC for them both in most cases. However, no, the DLC is not usable with a game not of it's region. Basically if you download Japanese DLC you can't use it with a US version game, and so on. It will not show up in the game unless it is from the same region. The games themselves are region free, but they will only read DLC from their own region. You also need multiple accounts to get DLC from multiple regions, but you can access it from all accounts on the PS3.

I take it that US and Europe games are incompatible with each other then.
That said, I heard there are risks for using multiple accounts on a single PS3...

As far as using DLC from one and a game from the other, I'm going to say yes by extrapolating one situation to the other here, but I don't really know as I don't own any Euro versions. I'm thinking they won't work together beacause US versions are NTSC and Euro versions are PAL and those formats are incompatable with each other. And even without that, the region issue will probably come up with the DLC itself.

How so? It's just like two siblings sharing it. One account for each. I've never had a problem using two accounts since the Fall of 2008. I use my JP account to access the DLC for my JP version stuff, but I play the games in my US account a-okay.

As Thunder said, two copies of the same game but in different regions - North America, Europe, Asia and Japan - are not treated as the same game by the system and therefore cannot make use of other regions' DLC. Of course, it might be possible through heavy hacking, but that's out of the question then.

Some TVs (such as an old one that I had until about 5 years ago) support both NTSC and PAL display, so those will probably work well. Of course, nowadays most people have HDTV so it's less troublesome...

No, there isn't any. You'll need to fake a Japanese address when making a JPN PSN account though.

Do I need separate user accounts for these PSN accounts? It is definitely not funny to have little or no game registered in my fake account, not to mention replaying the game all over on a new user account.

Why would it be not funny? I don't see any problem with having minimal number of games (or none) registered in any of the accounts.

I have mine set up that way yes, with two user accounts. One for Japan and one for America. I have all my save files in one user account, however I suppose you could keep all your Japanese save files in the user account you use to access the JP PSN and all your English save files in the user account you use to access the NA PSN. Sure it's kind of a waste to have two accounts, but it will allow access to the Japanese PSN and NA PSN, with everything you download from either being accessible from both user accounts. I'd check youtube for vids showing how to do this in case things have changed since I did this.

So I can register my real account in Malaysia (side note: I have already registered for Malaysian PSN account. Luckily, my VISA debit card works, so I can buy thing from Malaysian=Asian PSN and Play-Asia), and create a dummy account for USA and Europe (and Japan too if I ever need to). Since I can order US PSN cards locally, I don't have to scratch my head trying to deal with two accounts.

That said, I need some help on a few things:
- An United States of America located physical address, I'd say a fake residental house number and a legit road works fine, Unless if I don't really need one...
- A link to the most (or second most) famous Japanese e-mail hosting domain. I'd like to request a way to register for that account if possible.

You can use any email provider for all regional accounts, so there is no need to limit yourself to Japan-based ones, unless there's another reason for that.

As for addresses, I just use famous landmarks that provide their full address on their homepage. :XD:
They never bother verifying these things, lol.

Because... you might have to rewrite the record from scratch all over?

Even if it includes "White House" in its name? Just kidding...

That said, I have brought ASF-X Shinden II DLC for Ace Combat. Cost me a ton just for a fictional single-thrust, reverse-eagle winged fighter aircraft. Not exactly stealthy in design, and nowhere near PAK-FA, at least.

Edit:Shinden is actually quite a badass plane, It is optimized for long-range air-to-air bombardment, since the 6AAM can lock on targets from six (instead of four) kilometers away.

I buy my United Kingdom PSN cards from Cardscodes in the middle of the night after PCgamesupply cancelled my Paypal transaction with them (maybe because I Intend to buy both US and UK card from them?)... because the Ar tonelico III and Hyperdimension Neptunia disc in my shelf is Europe.

Any particular reason why you decided to go with the European releases though...? Is it for the other languages?

Speaking of cards, any recommended online stores for all the available regions? Too many stores are selling them for up to 1/3 more of their real value... :<_<:

First come first serve (Play-Asia sold out of them... so...). I'm not daredevil enough to deal with eBay for US release. Since the local store only have Europe version, that's what I get.

Ask them to deliver the card instantly... I mean, buy only digital downloads (no point of paying lots of money if it took eternity to deliver). If you're in US, buy it in a real store. Probably the best way is to get your hands on a legal, legitimate US credit card, but then again, that's kinda impossible...

The Malaysia had a local equivalent of eBay. That's how I get my copy of Hyperdimension Neptunia (it's brand new, btw).
