Progress report

The official English localisation for Ar tonelico 2 was fraught with inaccuracies and otherwise left much to be desired. This area serves as a place for a team of volunteers to plan, organize, and discuss how to do it better. People who aren't directly involved with the project are welcome to offer their feedback and encouragement.

This has been going on since Chaucer, actually. Which means 1300~1400's. Granted, it's taken a while for it to disappear.

Most language issues seem to disappear over time.

Progress!

...and about time too. I'll have limited Internet access for the next week or so, but have fun with this:

Shop dialogs for Skycat

I finally went with "Milady" for her 先輩 for Luca. It's not the best parallel, but it at least shows respect without being too subservient, and I think it sounds playful when she says it. And for the curious, there's plenty of innuendo to go around.

That surprisingly works rather well.

Calling a restaurant a "shop" seems like a bit of a usage stretch to me. Perhaps "cafe"
or "diner" would be more appropriate.

Well, the establishment pictured IS a maid cafe if not anything else. You can also buy take-home goods at both a cafe and diner, so it's not that far off either.

Well, I haven't much time lately to check all of the scripts or to finish my work on Spica's events (though I'm halfway through for both right now). However, your translations didn't strike me as wrong in anything up to the point I have checked, and furthemore, that "Milady" for Luca was a pretty clever choice. By the way, there are only two things I have to reply to your notes are these:

- No, I don't think it's possible to obtain the Swiss Roll recipe before visiting Sasha. Maybe that dialogue was a leftover from a beta version, or a debug dialogue of sorts.
- As for "Ar tonelico" vs "Ar Tonelico", I normally write it as the former, since that seems to be the official spelling. However, we need to come to an agreement on this and set it on the Style Guide to avoid problems later.

Ar tonelico is the official spelling, as are related terms such as Ar portal or Sol cluster. Though there has been at least one instance (the first At3 PV) where we saw Ar Tonelico as well.

I'd leave it in its original form, personally. It's an aesthetics thing, as it doesn't look quite right when it's spelled "Ar Tonelico".

Just something to think about for later on: If I can get the coding right, I may start experimenting with an entirely different, more efficient format for some parts for the next version of the menu text dump--Excel spreadsheets. By dumping text from pointers, I should have no trouble syncing up the Japanese and official Engrish. I should also be able to do things like dump item names and descriptions alongside each other rather than having them in separate lists, making finding context a little easier.

For the Dualstall conversions, columns could be arranged like:

String ID
Pointer US
Pointer JP
Speaker Name
Expression
JP Text
Official EN text
Retranslated EN text
Final edit EN text
Comments / old edits log

Columns like Speaker Name and Expression would have to be filled in manually. A separate tool designed to export the text to be inserted would do so on a priority basis--If there's no final edit, it''ll choose the retranslated version. if neither of those are filled in, it falls back on NISA's original.

...thoughts?

Hmm, seems we're switching to the table format that was proposed in RHDN for the text in the SLUS and .erx files?
Well, the layout seems good to me, and it'll surely make all of the steps needed to work in the retranslation much easier, so I say we should go with it.

I guess so. At least, mainly for large lists, and the text that really needs to be handled with care (like Dualstall). Lesser stuff can still be handled the way it is currently.

If you think there any other types of data columns (akin to Speaker and Expression) that might serve as a useful point of reference for those working on the text, I'll see what I can do about it when the time comes.

Also, I'll be happy to do the grunt work of filling in the speaker name and expression details for the Dualstall conversations once it's dumped in this format. I should be able to enable all of them for viewing with a code...

Ok, I have finally concluded with translating the shop events for Spica.
Right now I haven't decided yet what I'll translate next, but most likely, I'll do the scripts for all the events between the Endings and the Gaea/Deathlandia events, or the shop events for *shudder* Cynthia.

By the way, Cless, sorry I didn't continue with the conversation. Right now, I haven't thought about what other columns could be useful for working with these scripts, since maybe all of the ones you suggested would be enough for handling them. However, if I get any ideas, I'll make sure to tell you.

Hello friends!

Well, the iOS insanity dash at work has settled down pretty well, and we've got the most important apps out the door. That means I finally had time to take some vacation, and go back to get Tilia's endings in At3. (And start on the Ar Ru DLC.) I must say, Tilia completely redeemed that game for me. I came off of the Saki path pretty disappointed, but Tilia made it all worthwhile. That, combined with aquagon's encouraging post on the blog, has got me excited to continue with this project.

My next task is translating Frelia's binary field, which should be extra-interesting now that I've played Tilia's and Ar Ru's. I plan to start frequenting this board again, so I hope to see you all around!

I'll be looking forward to your next translations, which I'm sure will continue having the same high quality I've seen from you so far!

Well... any of the two Infelspheres and the tutorial texts could be options, I guess.
However, I'm not sure if we could go and ask Cless if we could get started with the erx files...

Hmm, I thought someone already did the Infelspheres, but I guess not. I'll do the Luca Infelsphere and nearby generic messages next, then (485 to 524).

Okay, I have just finished translating all of the events from the Endings to the where Luca's version of Gaea begins (EVDs 269-341), and I think I'll be taking later on the Tutorials (EVDs 1170-1220).

Luca Infelsphere level 1 is uploaded and ready for review! I'm actually somewhere in the middle of level 3 in translation progress, but level 1 is all I've checked over so far.

As usual, I've included a list of comments and questions in a separate file. For convenience, here's a list of things I'd specifically like feedback on, in spoiler tags just in case and to keep the post from hogging too much space by default. Some of these probably belong in the Decision on Names thread, but oh well.
Spoiler for bulky questions related to story content:  [ Open ]
- Luca uses the phrase 憧れのパスタリア ("longed-for Pastalia") alongside 大鐘堂 (The Grand Bell Hall) and 神聖政府軍 (The Sacred Army) as though it were a proper noun. Is this a common term that comes up elsewhere, or is she just throwing it in with the others?
- The restaurant scenes have a "Skycat" character and a "Luca" character, but they aren't really Skycat and Luca. "Skycat" calls "Luca" 先輩 here (like real Skycat always does with real Luca), but it makes sense here in a way that it doesn't make sense out in the real world, so I don't think we should use her usual pet name in English (I've been using "Milady" elsewhere and simply "miss" here). Other opinions are welcome, though.
- Are we calling the 絆玉 earned in the Infelsphere "Mindgems", or is that up for discussion? Given 絆, I'd prefer "Linkgem" or "Bondgem", emphasizing the connections made.
- What about the names for the individual gems? Most of them so far are fine, but a few aren't, and I can't remember whether they appear anywhere else.
- In one of the scenarios, Reisha sighs about not being able to afford おかず even on payday, meaning that they're eating nothing but rice. Should we keep "rice" here, or adapt it to a different staple food, like "bread" in the NISA version? The important part is that they can only afford the most basic of foods.
- The Dive Therapy training scene has the technical-sounding phrase "グラスノ波束流量を37Hmag/sより低めに設定して". Are there specific terms that should be used here? For now, I have "set the Grathnode wave packet flow a bit under 37Hmag/s".

Also, I'd like to take Cloche's side of the Infelsphere too, if no one minds, especially since there are a lot of similarities between the two versions.
