The RPG Maker thread

Postby wizzardx » Wednesday December 30, 2009 10:32 am

Hi there 8-)

Are you busy working on an RPG Maker game, or thinking of making one?

Do you have RPG Maker game creation-related questions, or do you just want to show off some interesting screen captures?

This is the thread for that :-)

I've been working on an Atelier based game in RPG Maker VX lately.

It uses Yanfly's Synthesis script:

Very easy to use. ^_^

That looks pretty good, and I see you also have a visual novel-like section :-)
Was that easy to add? Are you thinking about adding AT-styled synthesis conversations sometime?
And I see, the screen capture on that script's page has a girl asking about BBQ Soda :P

Thanks. ^_^
Kind of, what makes it difficult is that I have to have the game running with the scene in in motion before I can see if the pictures are positioned correctly.
I need to redo the forest map, its so big that the game slows down a slight bit. :^_^;:

Hmmh, if I'm going to make one, I suppose it's going to be another normal Traditional RPG game like Dragon Quest :^^;:

Ugh, configuring the title took 5 years off my life. :T_T:
But I think it was worth it. ^_^

A long time ago, I tried my hand at making a game...it was rather easy, but rather lengthy...I know if I ever get around to starting it, I'd like to share it.

More than likely it would be based on either my stories: "Mlada" a fantasy re-telling of an opera of the same name that I've drastically changed over the years...LOL...or my "Magical Melody Knights" in which Elegy and Melody came from...

More than likely it'd have a bit more of the traditional RPG feel, like Final Fantasy or something like that...

Once upon a time my best friend and I planned on making a game where Syphon Filter 2 was hijacked and never released. The heroes had to go back and time to make sure that it got released after all. The World Without Syphon Filter 2. :3 I do plan on making it someday. It featured a final boss with 1 HP.

I had other projects too that never got off the ground. The support just wasn't there.

I've been desperately wanting to make one of the myriad games bouncing around in my head. Tried to use RPG maker, and had a realization. Game credits are so long because you can't count on the writing staff to do any of the programm-y or artistic stuff. :(

I'm reeeaaally interested in making a game, but scripting just goes way over my head. Even though most scripts are already prepared, I have no idea how to put them in :^_^;:

I'm quite interested in this too. Though... although I can make the sprites myself, I don't know how to insert the battle system into the game in the first place, or how to edit the system to allow my sprites in. :^_^;: I guess it's time to start learning scripting... hahah.

I made a Touhou game in RPG Maker XP, just to test it out. It was really fun!

I'd love to get involved in making games again, but as far as the creative aspect goes - sprites, maps, script, etc - I'm completely unqualified (well, except for music, I can compose if I feel like it). It's more the behind the scenes stuff I like to work with, the databases and event creating and all the math and stuff...

Once upon a time my brother and I worked together on an RPG called "Angelus Theory", we eventually dropped the idea, but three of the characters we DID create would later become recurring NPCs in my tabletop campaigns. Partisan, Rai, and Maya.
"It is said that what is called "the spirit of an age" is something to which one cannot return. That this spirit gradually dissipates is due to the world's coming to an end. In the same way, a single year does not have just spring or summer. A single day, too, is the same. For this reason, although one would like to change today's world back to the spirit of one hundred years or more ago, it cannot be done. Thus it is important to make the best out of every generation"

Yeah, making a game is fairly multi-discipline. Your main options I think are:

- Be a jack of all trades
- Work in a team
- Do it mostly by yourself, but get help where you really need it
- Borrow a lot of material from other places
- Be happy with a game that you can make by yourself, even if it sucks in some ways (at least you can have fun trying some new things).

However you do it, it's a lot of work, and very time consuming to put together even a small adventure. Rewarding in it's own way however 8-). Probably the most important thing is to start with smaller, easier to create games, rather than the epic large-scale adventure you might be thinking of.

About the scripting/programming stuff, actually with RPG Maker you don't need to do that, except for some fairly advanced customizations, and only then if you're really interested in that kind of thing. You can make a fairly decent (but fairly standard-looking) adventure without scripting, and just using the user-friendly editor, after you've studied a tutorial or two.

Adding in pre-made scripts for some nice customizations is pretty simple too, most of the time . But it can get very complicated too if you're not careful.

^^^Everything Wizard said.^^^
Plus, a couple things to know about scripts.
The game loads the script data from the bottom up, so 'Main' is the first scene to load.
You'll probably notice in the script editor that all of the default settings are at the top, there is a reason for that.
Custom scripts are generally placed above main and bellow the default settings, so that the changes made in the custom script will override the original settings.
So, in a sense, if a script is placed closer to the bottom, then it will have a higher priority then all of the other scripts above it.
Much of the time custom scripts are made by editing sections of a default script, and then the custom script is placed somewhere bellow the original so it will override the setting.
However, that doesn't mean that scripts will always work flawlessly, since two or more scripts may cancel out, or use the same setting, you might have to relocate a script above or bellow another script, or in some cases apply a modification to one or more of the scripts to make them work.
Of course, if a script continues to fail when used with another script, then sometimes the best choice is to request a compatibility modification to the author of the script, if they except requests.
The other option is to drop one of the scripts.
Sometimes altering the default settings will nullify certain features in a script, so I recommend to avoid applying any changes to the default scripts without having, at the very least, a basic understanding as to what it is you are doing.
Scripts usually have an instruction near the top, read it before you apply it to your game, read it again before you test your game, and read it once again if any errors show up after testing.
Make sure to check for a compatible and incompatible list in the instructions.
If you do not understand the instruction, then my best advice is to either, not use the script, or to try it again after you have a better idea of what it is that you are doing.
Also, make sure that you have read the instructions on the script thoroughly before asking for help, as the script writers are busy with their own work, and will probably get angry if you asked a question that is already answered in the instructions.
Another important matter to consider, like I said earlier, some scripts will cancel out or use the same setting, be careful when you use a large number of scripts.
And finally, always give credit to the script writers.
That should cover pretty much everything a novice should know about scripts. :yay:
The rest should come after you've experienced working with them. :^_^;:

About the battle systems, there are several battle systems for VX, the one I'm using is the 'RPG Tankentai Sideview Battle System'.
This is how it loads the graphics for characters.
Let's say that the standard sprite for your characters is called: '!$Lyner.png', you will have to create 3 graphics of the same name, but with an underline followed by a number.
So the battle graphics for '!$Lyner.png' would have to be called: '!$Lyner_1.png', '!$Lyner_2.png' and '!$Lyner_3.png'.
All of the character's battle sprites should be placed in the 'Characters' folder.
Note, if you start a battle with a character that does not have any battle graphics, the game will crash.
Battlers will just load the still image in the 'Battlers' folder, if they do not have sprite graphics.
Other settings can be changed, such as whether or not you want the game to load 3 frames or more for the battle sprite, I changed mine so that it will load 4.
I'm still learning how to use the battle system, so I can't advise any farther on this subject. :)
