True. There are other ways he and you can learn faster, too. The way I studied, is by waking up in the middle of the night (that way, there's minimal noise) and reading out loud whatever subject's at hand. :3

And lol, my very first import game was DJ Max Portable, which was in Korean! :XD: Good thing it had an Engrish language built in.

ファイナルファンタジーなどのようなRPGから日本語を習って始まるって難しいだけど段々楽々になるので勧め。

私はね、アルトネリコ2から始まった。懐かしいけれど、同時に漢字を覚えたり文法を練習したりすることってとっても面白かったよ (ノ ̄▽ ̄)ノ彡☆

因みに誰かが日本語に関する問題があれば私に訊いてね~

What am i doing now is memorizing the Hira and Kata table.

I can remember some of them, but that's all. :^^;:

I should probably get a dictionary.

Why do your post remind me of ZUN's talk style so much *shot*

I've memorized both tables. I'm moving on to the grammer grammer (this is getting annoying) grammar soon. My friend said that Japanese grammar is easier than English though. Is this true ?

Why do we keep arguing over which Touhou track is the best? It's a moot argument. They're all stupidly incredibly amazingly epicly godly full and made of win.

I ask if I have a problem with someone Incidentally - Japanese

Er... wow. So playing a game in Japanese can actually make some differences?

I've been learning Japanese at school for 3 years now. Can read hiragana and katakana very well, and around 30 kanjis. I sucks in grammar and to think that I just took a JLPT two weeks ago...

But but... You have a major advantage by knowing Chinese...

No language has easier grammar than English. No, really.

Japanese doesn't have complex rules like genders, cases, agreements or inflections. But its grammar is very "alien" so to speak - you can remove every part of the sentence and still make sense, lots of interjections that have no meaning but are still added in often, the ridiculously complex honorific/humble system, etc. It's also different than most other languages in that it's a topic prominent language, not subject prominent.

Japanese grammar is extremely similar to Korean, and very similar to Altaic languages (Turkish, Mongolian, etc.) so if you speak one of those, Japanese grammar will be a breeze to you.

Only if you really put efforts into learning it. Otherwise, no.

I meant Hrist's post. It's like reading a spell card description from ZUN 8-)

Hm ? It's complex ? I thought you only need a few honorifics

AD-chan wrote:Er... wow. So playing a game in Japanese can actually make some differences?

Only if you've known some Japanese beforehand :V

Like when I play games to (unintentionally) improve my English. Much more fun and effective than going to classes.

Now that you mention it... :o

Formless God wrote:Hm ? It's complex ? I thought you only need a few honorifics

Nope. It has two completely different grammar system, one for honorific, and one for humble, as well as some irregular verbs to memorize.

But learning a language from video games is very limited. At most, we can only learn from reading and/or listening...

Kikai, jikai, zehi, ganba(rou).

Or you can just look them up using dictionaries~ :yay:

I agree. If you're really serious with learning Japanese, taking a proper class is a must. Otherwise you might end up like how I am now - half fluent, half newbie.

I have no way of paying for lessons though. It depends. :^^;:

Chinese gives me an advantage? Well, i guess so. At least i can tell from what are they saying.

私 - watashi or something like that. :^^;:

I would prefer to read full sentences though, like playing SRW. Commands like 攻击,防御,回避等等, are all in Kanji, so I can read it.

For the story? No wai.

Kanji is the devil :V I knew 60 when I was at my Japanese language prime in 11th grade. I know all the hiragana/katakana now, and I remember the common kanji (numbers, elements) But I can't write anything anymore, just read it.

I have five import games: Ar tonelico II (needed a wiki + babelfish to get through), Tales of Destiny (haven't played), Growlanser II (played in english), Ouendan 2 (doesn't really need language skills), and Suikoden Card Stories (used a guide when I played)

Oh, and I have some language learning books, but not the time to actually devote to using them.

Japanese is not that easy, mind you. I've been learning it for about 2 years, and still have problem understanding RPG dialogs sometimes.

Kari wrote:But I can't write anything anymore, just read it.

Same here. I've learned kanji by memorizing their shapes, as a result, I can't write most of the kanjis I know, though I can recognize them in a quick glance.

I'm pretty terrible reading kanji as well, but a couple of them are a trick!

At the end of anime, it will often say, "次回", jikai, or "next time"! Along with "お楽しみに!", "Look forward to it!"

I'll be attempting FFXIII in JP soon (released today! Ship soon please, my pre-order!) I'm hoping it shouldn't be too bad, since I imagine it will have both text & voice overs. (I was able to play and sort of understand FFIX in Japanese)

Same for Ar Tonelico 3. Hoping that text + voice will be helpful.

Ah yeah, I can read the hiragana/katakana characters just fine, but the meanings of the words are a mystery.

High five!

I do know more or less what a sentence means when there are kanji in it but if you ask me to translate I'll probably be stump.
