I have Skype, but while I can use its text IM if anyone wants, I absolutely cannot use the voice chat feature. I'm really scared of talking directly to others in my own voice, so...

A notice for those who try to message me on Skype: I've got Skype on my phone and so I appear online on Skype 24/7 regardless of whether or not I'm at my computer. Basically there are "bots" that crawl through forums, looking for email addresses to spam. Nowadays, they're so intelligent that not even replacing @ with at and . with dot, or adding spaces to the addresses, still won't work, as long as you have a common mail service at the end (ex. gmail.com, yahoo.com).

That's true. However, the text option does exist for those who don't.

Yup, but then again the only point of using Skype is for voice chat. If you need text messages, AIM/MSN/YIM are much more common and better choices (I think).

That's true, and AIM and YIM have voice capabilities too. Although I prefer Skype since you can have group voice chats.

Skype has nice text communications, too. You can have a group chat, and you can option yourself not to leave it and the convo can still go on, etc. There's a lot of fun things on skype...like screen sharing.

I think the main advantage of Skype is it's popularity and how it can work with the regular phone network (SkypeIn, SkypeOut).
Besides that, I feel it's kind of bad

1) They use a very secret network protocol and work against attempts to reverse engineer or audit it. So basically, people need to use 2 IM programs. 1 for skype, and 1 for all the other IM networks.

2) Skype is a proprietary program, that you can only get from the Skype company. You can't download the source code and compile it yourself, or check for back doors or other security problems, or easily run it on any other operating system or CPUs besides the ones that the Skype company supports.

3) There are rumors that Skype has backdoors for governments, police, etc, if they want to listen in, even if your conversation is supposedly encrypted.

These points aren't relevant to most people and very few people care, but they kind of bug me. I prefer to use open source alternatives myself, when they get the job done. When they are decent, they're usually a lot more customizable too.
