Progress report

The official English localisation for Ar tonelico 2 was fraught with inaccuracies and otherwise left much to be desired. This area serves as a place for a team of volunteers to plan, organize, and discuss how to do it better. People who aren't directly involved with the project are welcome to offer their feedback and encouragement.

It's really annoying that a load of text is hidden in the exes. Do we have any means of putting the text back in them once it's modified, or is that reliant on Cless?

I think the talk topics are probably the most important thing there (and likely a massive chunk of work). It's pretty jarring playing the game with the beautiful modified text, then leaping into a talk topic where the girls are speaking NISA XD

That will be reliant on Cless. After all, he's our specialist on text menu stuff. And after I finish with Sasha's events, maybe I'll contact him to dump the text from the Talk Topics to begin with Jakuri's.

And as something else related to the project, I'm beginning to think that we'll have to find ourselves a new graphics editor.

I've been lurking here ever since i started playing AT2, wondering if and how I could help.
I have experience with de-texting images and other image manipulations, what exactly is needed in this case?

Basically, we need to change names that are stored as graphics, so they match with the names we chose for the retranslation (examples: Luca's surname to Trulywaath in the status menu graphics, Sea of Nam to Sea of Num in Jakuri's Cosmosphere, and some others).

As for a test, how about editing the phase title in this image to "Infel Phira Dependency"?

I had to trace every letter to vector shapes for this one, which isn't a problem if the letter is available somewhere...

Whoa, it looks pretty well!
As for the font, I remember fetjuel saying something about there being a font for the phase splash screens, and save screens (like the one you just made). However, for the other things, like character names and location names, I think there isn't an actual font.

Ok, then I will just keep vector-tracing them. As you probably noticed, that makes them look slightly different, but it should be close enough.
I could start right away if you want me to, but I never worked on a project like this before so I'd be grateful if you could point me to some sort of organizational guide or something (where/how to get raws of pictures etc).

It looks close enough to the original, it's no problem.
And I'll need a little of time to sort the other graphics that need modifications, since after the wiki in which we had them listed fell, we lost that information.

A general comment, most of those name changes should be fine, since they're smaller or the same length, but one thing to consider is to fit longer ones into the same pixel boundaries you'd have to shrink the text size, which could make some names look inconsistent (or worse, harder to read) in comparison to others. In some cases like the Gaea: xx -> Deathlandia: xx one it's probably best just to drop the unnecessary prefix.

I already ran into resizing problems, so yeah I'm going to probably do that once I reach that image (going through them alphabetically). Or maybe I'll try to squeeze them into a double-liner, depending on how it'll look.
I wish someone could find a way to change those boundaries so we don't run into such issue.

By the way, this is related to the item names as well:

I just finished translating the dialog for the Dress Up Book/Fashion Illustrated recipe, and it's basically about it being made from a collection of stylish dress pictures that Sasha had. Maybe we'd really need to tweak the name for the recipe...

Hmm, according to this, it could mean "railway station building" in Japanese, but "Termina" is not a word in English (afaik).
And that meaning doesn't fit here... But meh, since it would have been ターミナル if they meant "Terminal"... I guess I should just accept things decided long before I came here lol

edit: btw, I'm curious how you guys plan to handle the Soraneko/Umineko pun? I didn't get the English version of it at all and only realized it recently when I reverted the names to Japanese

I took a look at this, and I managed to get something working for talk topics and heroine topics. I've put the details in my script thread.
