Progress report

The official English localisation for Ar tonelico 2 was fraught with inaccuracies and otherwise left much to be desired. This area serves as a place for a team of volunteers to plan, organize, and discuss how to do it better. People who aren't directly involved with the project are welcome to offer their feedback and encouragement.

Here's the costume descriptions. Names left alone since I couldn't remember where we put them, but I had some comments on a few of them. One interesting tidbit that was lost was that the main reason Cloche's design was so difficult was that they couldn't decide what to conceal... in other words, how revealing her outfit should be.

And here's the QADATA file.
Coming up next, the exe files 30 and 33 (the ones containing the topic names).

Wow, we're roaring through these!

I've posted in the editing thread about the dualstall topics, though this thread might be a more appropriate place to say that despite what I said earlier about trying to keep the Dualstall topic names the same, after playing through them in-game to test my edits, about half of them don't actually seem to be fit for purpose :^^;:

kWhazit: I think the last place we discussed costume names was here - though I'm not sure any conclusions were drawn.

And here are the retranslations for the Talk Topic names (SLUS30).

EDIT2: And I've just finished with the Synchro Topic names. Here's the retranslated file. Next, I'll be retranslating SLUS 46 (except for the dummied-out monster descriptions, as kWhazit already handled them).

EDIT3: Well, since it was quite short, I've also retranslated the area entry messages (SLUS 43). Next, I'll be going back to my plan of retranslating SLUS 46.

It surprised me how many of the provocative NISA lines in the Dive Therapy text are actually perfectly accurate. The lines are (mostly) organized by type, which helps to some extent. Some of the responses are used for multiple questions and should be tested as thoroughly as feasible, though I did cross-reference with a guide to try ensuring the wording makes sense regardless, though there are some things that apparently aren't supposed to make much sense. At least a few of the IPDs just seem to be trying to get a reaction out of Luca.

I couldn't get too much done over the last week or two, but I've looked over 27 and 79 now (see the editing thread).

I guess the most notable thing I did was get annoyed that the text still didn't fit into 27 after I'd reduced it to fit the visible space, so I made some changes to my atlas passthrough script to make it write the lines that didn't fit to other places in the file. The emulator doesn't seem to have any problems with displaying it at least, so at some point I may check to see if it works on a real PS2, then potentially go back to some of the slus files we had file space problems with and put back some of the lines that were cut down.

Ok, it took a little longer than I had expected, but here's the retranslated SLUS 46 (character descriptions and names): http://metafalica.metalbat.com/aquagon/ ... .19.46.txt

However, I think this is going to need some major trimming, as several lines got pretty long upon getting translated. Oh, and ignore the untranslated JP texts, as these are the enemy names and descriptions, which kWhazit already retranslated.

Next, I'll be working on SLUS 48 (the Cosmosphere and Infelsphere descriptions).

EDIT: Okay, here's SLUS 48: http://metafalica.metalbat.com/aquagon/ ... .19.48.txt
Next, I'll work on SLUS 51.

EDIT2: And here's SLUS 51: http://metafalica.metalbat.com/aquagon/ ... .19.51.txt.
Coming up next, SLUS 53, which is the Current Objectives text (and home to the Promise Hill failure).

A little bit of good news; I just read a comment in slus 51 about wanting to put Emptiness in one of the spare hymnos slots, so out of curiosity I took a look at the area of the file where the pointers to the song titles and descriptions for that section are. The "block" for each one was relatively simple, 16 bytes, 4 as a pointer to the title, an unknown 4, 4 as a pointer to the description then another unknown 4. Swapping some values around between the first song entry and the second, then rebuilding the ISO revealed that the 2nd 4 bytes seemingly did nothing, and the last 4 bytes changed the song that was played. But then I had the thought that the 2nd might be a permission determining whether you can see the entry based on a flag in the savegame or something. So to see if that was the case, I took a look around the structure for the slus 67 tutorial entries, where I knew the seemingly inaccessible Synchronicity tutorial text was referenced. It turned out to be an identical 16 byte block pattern there, so I tried replacing the second set of 4 bytes of the Synchronicity entry with the value next to the Dual Song tutorial title, and well, voila :)

Whoa, these really are great news! :o_o:
This means that you managed either to fix a flag-related bug, or restore a dummied out feature, void! Excellent work!

Thanks :) It's a workaround really, since it should just be telling it to use the Dual Song tutorial flag as the condition to show this tutorial instead of its original one, which it seems became impossible to trigger somehow. I did the same thing for the other inaccessible Evolved Song Magic tutorial, changing it to use the same flag as the Song Magic one. From my notes in slus 67, I don't think there were any other non-displaying ones, were there?

Still, that takes care of one of the major problems the game had when it came to telling the player how to use one of its essential features. Maybe we should add a couple of dialogues in the evds where the tutorials whose flags you borrowed are triggered to indicate that these two became accessible...

And no, as far as I remember, there aren't any other tutorial entries that aren't displayed in the game.

EDIT: And in other news, I've also finished with SLUS 53. Next, I'll begin working in SLUS 59 (the profiles in the Status screen).
:
EDIT2: And now I've finished with SLUS 59. Next, the only SLUS file we have yet to retranslate: SLUS 76, with the information about the Dualithnode Crystals.

Nice, almost done on the slus front unless we've missed anything then! I don't think you need to worry about anything other than the crystal descriptions in that file, I've already changed the tutorial to use bits of your translation from one of the evd files.

EDIT:

Another problem down 8-)

I was taking a look at Luca's Cosmosphere background problem again, and I noticed that her L6 one (a red cake with a flower field) didn't match any of the images in res/SPIRITUAL (the actual BG images used for the Cosmospheres). So I concluded it had to be hidden in one of the IPU files.

After spending a very unproductive hour looking all around the internet for IPUCONV (it only seemed to be downloadable on the source website, which is now offline) so I could take a look at what the files actually contained, I bit the bullet and started taking a look at the sequence of image references in the event replay section. Luca's were 45-53, then Cloche's started at 55. Changing one to the missing 54 revealed it was the correct image for Luca's L9. This was very fortunate, since it meant the file did exist in the correct format roughly where it needed to be, and fixing it would just be a question of locating the files to shuffle them around. I eventually tracked the Cosmosphere preview images down to res/IPU/OMAKE, and renaming OMAKE_P01_06 to OMAKE_P01_10 (previously the unused correct image), then shifting the others down a number worked perfectly. For lack of a better place, I've uploaded the renamed files to Soukyuu's IPU folder (pardon the intrusion), since that's where the other modified IPU files are.

Whoa, not only one, but TWO fixes!?

That's impressive! Now the problems with the CS backgrounds and the profile descriptions have been solved, and all thanks to you void. You've done an excellent job fixing up these bugs.
As for me, I haven't checked up the lastest edits or fully retranslated the Dualithnode crystals file because I got sidetracked with other little translation work, but as soon as I finish it up, I'll finish up all of that. Sorry about that.

EDIT: And with this, we've finished retranslating the SLUS files. Just the NPC texts remain now...

Nice! I'll take a look at those and your comments on the last 2 edits later. It may emerge that some of the other SLUS files need some brief checking over, but it shouldn't be much.

Remember to use my edited QVDATAE files when you check those, and like you said, we really only need to retranslate the downright incorrect lines.

Ok, I've finally gotten started with the QVDATAE files, and here's the folder where I'm dropping them.

So far I've only checked and retranslated the first three, but I hope I'll continue making progress with them during this week.

EDIT: Oh, yeah. I'm up to QVDATAE 4, and all of these are from the files you edited, void.

Hmm, the ones I left the new line blank for seemed reasonable to me, but it seems they're different from the source Japanese in more places than I expected. I've made a few more edits to the changed versions and reuploaded them to my edited_qvdatae folder.

(And yes, "Signpost Maze" is a Link's Awakening reference ;) That's what I was immediately reminded of when I got to that initial part of Deathlandia in my first playthrough.)

Well, the only major obstacle we have still pending are QVDATAE files. I've been working in them so far, but given the large volume, I'd be very glad to have some help in checking and retranslating them. For reference, in up to file 11/359.
