I've decided to hold an audition for the character voices in my RPG Maker project.
Those of you that wish to participate, please post your audio samples in this thread.
Suggestions, scene ideas and dialogs are also excepted, but please try to keep on topic.
There are no deadlines to the audition, since more characters will eventually have a voice, so I'll update this thread whenever a new voice is required.

The requirements are:
  • A clear audio voice sample (not a lot of static or microphone sounds in the background).
  • A clip where the voice is similar to one of the references.
  • The voice must be in English.

Note, that I might apply an adjustment to the speed and pitch.
One thing to keep in mind, this audition isn't a simple fun and games matter, it's primary purpose is to find a voice for each character.
So it's something that only those who are fully prepared to submit audio samples should join, and those that are not prepared or feel that they will not be able to give support in the future should avoid, which is why I chose the word audition.
Elirica will have only one voice actress, as will the rest of the cast of characters.
However, there will be circumstances when random voices are needed, where pretty much anyone can participate.
As of now, I am only concerned with finding a voice for the leading role, once that part has been decided, I will open more auditions for the other characters as they are needed.
Also, not every scene or character will have to have a voice, what I'm looking at is having voices for the: opening sequence, character introduction scenes, alternate endings, battles, and the occasional filler scenes.
Elirica and the characters that are in party may have small parts on the field, such as "Barrel!!", or when Elirica reacts to something in front of her.
The opening sequence in itself will require a voice for: Elirica, the Prince in Elirica's dream, several maids and servants, Elirica's mother and father, the Puni Prince, the story tellers around the campfire, Revirna, and a possible narrator.
The first prince mentioned will be a character that I have yet to create, and aside from him, only Elirica and Revirna matter as far as the voice is concerned, since they are both characters that will make regular appearances.
The Puni Prince is not a regular character, he will only appear in the opening and during alternate endings.
In addition to the characters created for this story, there will be several cameo characters appearing from time to time.
So far, I've decided to include Gotou (Mana Khemia 2) as a party member, and I'm looking at having Eisel (Atelier's: Elie and Viorate) and Viorate (Atelier Viorate), or Iris and Yuveria (Atelier Iris's: 1 and 2) as a rival party that may appear during the alchemy exam, the Viorate or Iris team will appear depending entirely on a variable or action that the player has already taken, and I'm hoping to include battles, so they might require a voice.


The following is still in development:


[Elirica Adelind] ((Voice: Calidynd))
Age: 18
Class: Amateur Alchemist.
Personality:
Young and naive, she has never actually had to work before, since she has always had a maid tending to her needs.
She lacks sense and skill, but is not a bad person, and her personality will develop, or regress, based on the players actions.
Description:
'Elirica comes from a wealthy family.
She has dreamt of marring a prince from a faraway land ever since her childhood.
On Elirica's 18th birthday, her father announced that her dream would come true, and that he had arranged for her to marry a prince.
Elirica was overjoyed when she heard this news, but when the prince was introduced, Elirica found that he was far from anything she had expected.
He actually resembled a Puni.
With her hopes and dreams crushed, Elirica lost control and leapt through a window, fleeing the scene.
It's hard to tell as to how far Elirica ran, since she wasn't paying any attention at the time, but she eventually grew tired and hungry, and fell unconscious in Brume Forest.
Elirica awoke to find herself in the workshop of an alchemist by the name of Revirna, who had apparently nursed her back to health.
However, Revirna is a very 'money-driven' individual, and expects full compensation for the expensive herbs that she used to heal Elirica.
Elirica could always ask her father to pay off the debt, but since she doesn't want to marry 'Puni-Boy', that is entirely out of the question.
Revirna decides to take Elirica in as an apprentice, so that she can earn her way out of the debt.
But when the alchemist has to leave town for a month and places Elirica in charge of the workshop, what will the poor aristocratic, amateur alchemist do?'

[Revirna Argen]
Age: She has been 18 for the past 10 years (real age: 28).
Class: Master Alchemist.
Personality: She is a miser, and seems to be a bit touchy whenever the subject of age is brought up.
Revirna always has some sort of angle on the situation, if there is a way to make money fast, she will probably consider it, regardless of who she has to exploit.
Description:
Revirna is a well acclaimed alchemist, she graduated from one of the finest academies at the age of 16.
Revirna found Elirica unconscious in Brume Forest and nursed her back to health with a special portion.
When Elirica awoke, she found herself in Revirna's workshop.
Elirica's first impression of Revirna was that of a highly sophisticated and well educated individual, that takes great pride in her work, which was true, to a certain extent.
Revirna sat and listened contently as Elirica explained the events she had gone through, all the while nodding her head with an elegant and understanding smile, upon finishing Elirica stood up, thanked the hostess that had been so kind to her and politely walked to the door.
But, she was stopped by the voice of Revirna asking 'Where do you think your going?'
Elirica replied stating that she didn't want to overstay her welcome.
At this, Revirna explained that Elirica wasn't going anywhere, and that the herbs used in the potion to restore her health were very costly, and that Elirica would have pay off her debt before she could go.
Revirna's appearance seemed to change from that of a kind hearted good Samaritan, to the cold exterior of a strong willed business women, who had no intention of letting generosity enter the picture.
Elirica asked how much it cost, and Revirna replayed with a sinister look, that it would be 5000 cole, not a lot, to someone that was raised with an excessive amount of money, and Elirica started to replay with the statement that she will ask her father to compensate her next time she sees him, but as she started the realization hit her that if she returned to her home, then she would be forced to marry the ugly 'puni-prince'.
At this point, Revirna explained that if she wanted to pay off the debt, then she would have to work under Revirna as an alchemist apprentice.

[Phawn]
Age: Unknown, he is immortal.
Class: General of Shaded Meadows.
Personality: He hates everything, humans and Phyro in particularly, though he might like a certain elf that is the founder of Phyro's fan club, he will never admit it.
Stubborn and always finding fault with others, he will often use praises such as: stupid human, stupid girl, stupid boy, stupid chair, stupid door, stupid wall, etc.
Description:
Picture.
Playable: Yes.
Voice reference: 1.


[Clarissa Liridon]
Age: 23
Class: Lieutenant.
Personality: She is very strict and follows a personal code of chivalry, so she is quite often disgusted by her lords actions, though she remains loyal for unknown reasons.
A brilliant tactician, much of the time she has to correct the mistakes of her lord, who is usually given the credit for her work.
Description:

Playable: Yes.
Voice reference: 1.


[Lord Gabrius Gusto] ((Voice: Palsa))
Age: 36
Class: War-lord.
Personality: A narcissist, he is his first love, so to speak, the type of person that spends hours in front of the mirror.
He believes himself to be the ideal man, that every women is in love with, which is almost the case, for those that do not really know him.
Description:

Playable: No.
Voice reference: 1.


[Prince Puniuses the XIII]
Age: 39
Class: Prince of a faraway kingdom.
Personality: Not much is known about him, and nothing more then what is seen should require an explanation.
He appears to be a whinny, spoiled brat, that has received everything he has ever wanted, who really hates it when he doesn't get his way.
Description:

Playable: No.
Voice reference: 1, 2.

I just added to the personality section under the characters profiles, so it should be easier to follow what I'm looking at, though I still have to finish work on the descriptions and add proper dialogs, sorry about that, I've been recovering from a slight case of insomnia lately and so I haven't been able to focus on my work.
At the time, finding a voice for Elirica is my primary goal, so I don't really need to have voices for the other characters yet, but I'll still be more then happy to accept a tryout for any of them.

I'm planning to add a character introduction dialog, but I haven't written it yet, so I'll update this later, and I'll also add battle dialog, but there is no hurry on that.


Here is a quick scene that I'm working on, I haven't finished it yet, so the words are subject to change:

[Scene - Elirica Awakens in the workshop of Revirna:]

((Elirica is awakened by the churning sound of the cauldron.))
Elirica: "Ughh. . . ."
((The room fades in as her eyes focus to the new surroundings.))
((She is lying in a bed.))
((She looks around the room.))
Elirica: ". . Wh. . Where am I?. . ."
((Several seconds pass and a door opens.))
((A women walks into the room, stops, and then notices that Elirica is awake.))
Women: "Ah, your awake!"
((The women approaches Elirica.))
Women: "Did you sleep well? I found you lying unconscious in Brume Forest."
Women: "I thought you were dead at first, and you nearly were, but I managed to nurse you back to health."
Women: "Your awfully lucky that I happened to walk by, you might have ended up as the main dish for a family of Punis."
((The women smiled with a gleam that almost sparkled, she was very pretty.))
((But somehow the word 'puni' depressed Elirica.))
Women: ". . Is there something the matter? . ."
Elirica: ". . Huh? . . Oh! I'm fine, its just. . Where am I?. ."
Women: "Your in my Workshop, I'm an alchemist, Revirna Argen, alchemist of Ceresburg."
((Revirna smiled again.))
Revirna: "You must be hungry, I'll make you something to eat, and you can tell me all about what happened."
Elirica: "Uhm, thank you. . ."
((The screen fades out for several seconds before it fades back in.))
((Both Elirica and the Revirna are now sitting at the table, and Elirica had just finished explaining her situation up to this point.))
Elirica: "~. . And he looked like a puni!. ."
((Elirica starts to cry with a slight whine.))
Revirna: "I see. . . That must have been a very emotional experience. . ."

I still have to complete this scene, but it should do for now.

I decided to try voicing Gabrius Gusto myself, here is a quick clip that will must likely end up in the game. ^_^

I was trying to go for a sound that is similar to Captain Zapp Brannigan from Futurama, since his personality is heavily based on that character.
Another one of his character influences is Captain Miles Gloriosus from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
Also, I think this will give you a good idea of just what Clarissa has to go through. :lol:

stupid me.....i just figured out that my laptop has a built in mic. *hardfacepalm* so i've been playing with recording my voice all morning...

but because i'm techy, i tried looking into how i can change my voice to make it feminine. i'm using audacity for recording and editing, but it's "change pitch" function isn't producing a very good result. it just makes me sound "chipmunky". i've tried using a falsetto voice too but that doesn't seem to help much....just makes me sound like a chipmunk using falsetto, haha.

and i've seen google point me at the voice modifier programs out there, all for windoze and all wanting money, though they do have free trials. but i keep thinking that if audacity is really as awesome as everyone says it is, surely there's a way to trick it myself so i can do my own voice altering instead of having to rely on somebody's black-box-prepackaged-program.

unless you already have something else better in mind and i don't need to worry about it, Palsa? :XD:

Well, there are two things to keep in mind.
1. I will probably edit the pitch anyway, so unless its an extremely low pitch, like James Earl Jones, then I can probably modify the voice to sound the way it should.
Actually, because of the loss of quality through constant editing, I'd much rather edit the audio on this side anyway.
2. RPG Maker does include a speed/pitch editor, so I can always modify it in game if necessary.

Now, for software, I actually use a combination of editors.
For pitch and speed modification, I use a WinAmp plugin called PaceMaker.
The free version is all that is required.
Now, PaceMaker will only modify the audio as it plays on WinAmp, and all of the audio exporter plugins for WinAmp are horrible.
To capture the audio as it plays on WinAmp, I use an add-on called Freecorder 4, which works for both FireFox and Explore.
Both utilities have a free version, though, like I said earlier, I'd rather do the editing on this side, since I'll have to clear out any background noises.

Just a thought, if your concerned about pitch, why not try Phawn?
All that would be required is a simple: "Stupid [fill in whatever comes to mind]!!", and a "Barrel!!" comment, that should be plenty for an audition sample. ^_^

cool, i've no problem with that -- it really is much easier to do all the audio editing in one place. though audacity does have a noise filtering function....and i've experimented with it and it seems to work pretty good.

at any rate, i went ahead and did some reading up on altering voices from male to female, and apparently using a formant filter as well as changing the pitch is one possible approach. so i experimented with that a little after voicing a couple of lines of Elirica's and Revirna's from the dialogue in this thread.

consider it my audition submission. :3 they're best listened to in the order of Revirna 1 and 2, then Elirica 1 and 2, since as i played around with the filters, the results seemed to get *a little* better. but it still sounds a bit weird. :shockblink3: i know nothing about audio engineering, so i basically played around with it while not really knowing what i was doing.

btw, i also have the original unmodified samples for those, if you want them. though i don't think they're "raw", since i think i noise-filtered them already before saving.

Cool, I've tested with altering audio myself, and what I've found is that if you want to change the sound from male to female, the best way is to follow this approach:
Male to female: Use an file with fast talking and adjust the speed down and the pitch up.
Female to male: Use an file with slow talking and adjust the pitch down and the speed up.
Always adjust down first.

Uhm, could you try one of the male characters please? :^^;:

The entire event officially ends with Elirica inventing contact lenses, and thus solving all of the problems. :)

Hmm, I think I might have some characters you could voice, but I haven't written a description or started on their segments as of yet.

Yeah, I can't wait until that part of the game is put into dialogue form. :lol:

Your voice would work perfectly for either Elirica or Revirna! ^_^
For Elirica I applied a slight pitch and speed adjustment: speed: -8, pitch: 0, speed and pitch: +8.
For Revirna: speed: +5, pitch: +1, speed and pitch: -5.
So, are you up for voicing any of them? :)

Here are the common dialogs for Elirica:
"Alright!" (picture, emotion: :cute: :D ),
"Wha-aghh!!" (falling, picture, picture 2, picture 3 emotion: :>_<;: :DX: ),

At the moment, I haven't fully written a script, aside from the two scene's I posted earlier in this topic, but the common dialogs are small events that will happen on the field regularly, for things like: "Barrel!!", or when Elirica falls off the bridge in the highlands (she lives), or if something happens that startles her.
Would you mind trying some of these?
